Intermediate Civil/Structural Engineer

(full-time permanent position)

Location: London, Ontario

As an Intermediate Structural Engineer, you will join our structural engineering team to provide bridge/culvert, transportation, building and other structural engineering solutions to a variety of municipal and private clients. Working with our core group of engineers and technologists, this role will involve complete delivery of structural projects including planning, assessing, designing, approvals, tendering and construction administration.

What you will do:

  • Supervise and manage a team of design technicians and engineers-in-training
  • Mentor and support young staff in their career development, as well as receive mentoring and support for your own development
  • Take leading design engineer roles for the following work:
    • Bridge, culvert and retaining wall rehabilitation and replacement design
    • Transportation, geometric roadway design in conjunction with bridge/culvert work
    • New building and building modification design
    • Permitting and approvals from various government agencies, such as conservation authorities and Municipal/Provincial Federal agencies
    • Completion of general structural calculations
    • Hydrologic and Hydraulic analyses to support bridge and culvert replacements
    • Visual structure inspections in accordance with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual
    • Building condition assessments
    • Load ratings on existing bridge structures
    • Contract documents including form of tender and special provisions
    • Quantity take-off and cost estimates
  • Contract administration and/or construction inspection including review of shop drawings
  • Support planning staff with Environmental Assessment work for transportation projects, with the opportunity to take larger roles in delivery of projects
  • Assist with delivery of other structural projects supporting our Land Development, Linear or Water/Wastewater design teams, as required

 What you will need:

  • Graduate of a civil engineering program or equivalent with a focus on structural engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, or ability to obtain a license within one year of hiring
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6), the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario's (MTO) Structural Manual, Ontario Provincial Standards and applicable legislation around bridge and culvert replacement and rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and material design codes
  • Working understanding of Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), MTO, Municipal, and City transportation design guidelines would be considered an asset
  • Experience with administration of construction contracts
  • Experience responding to requests for proposals (RFPs) and assembling engineer proposals
  • Strong organizational, oral, written communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to objectively evaluate problems and opportunities and think outside the box
  • Motivated to continuously learn and broaden their experience to enhance their engineering knowledge and qualifications
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of AutoCAD and finite element software
  • Possess a valid driver's licence
